People of Parkside Sunset

Parkside property owners: would you like a street tree or sidewalk garden?

A generous grant from AT&T will pay most of the costs for street trees and sidewalk gardens to be planted in front of your property. Street trees and sidewalk gardens increase your property value, clean the air, reduce stormwater run-off and beautify the neighborhood.

Friends of the Urban Forest, a 31-year-old non-profit organization, will handle everything – they’ll arrange the permits, remove a section of concrete from the sidewalk, provide the trees and/or plants, and coordinate the planting.

The cost to the property owner is $135 for the first tree, $105 for each additional tree, and $160 to $215 for a sidewalk garden.

A portion of the AT&T grant is supporting two youth groups, the Pacific Rowing Club and Sunset Youth Services, both of which have organized teams of 20-25 youth to spread the word to District Four residents about the opportunity to get subsidized trees and sidewalk gardens. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings, youth are knocking on doors, distributing information, and signing people up.

Many District 4 residents have signed up so far, and sign-ups will continue throughout the summer. To take advantage of this opportunity to make your block greener, contact Doug Lybeck at Friends of the Urban Forest at [email protected] or 415-268-0773.
