People of Parkside Sunset

The Recreation & Parks Department project team has presented designs for Larsen Playground that includes a 30+ foot sculpted plane, with a “jetstream” of climbing ropes, swings, and a customized preschool play structure.

The playground, located next to 19th Avenue near Ulloa Street, is currently a sand pit with a few swing sets.

On August 22, the Recreation & Parks Department and the Friends of Larsen Playground held a community meeting regarding the renovation of Larsen Playground. At the first meeting in May, the community expressed strong interest in installing an airplane play structure reminiscent of the beloved iconic jets that Sunset District children played on for years at Larsen Playground. Other suggestions included additional flight related play structures, creating an area for younger children and changing the location of the restrooms.

The next several months will be devoted to finalizing the design and fundraising. If all goes according to plan, construction will begin in 2014. Below is a draft of the project as planned so far, which is estimated at $1 million. Stay tuned for more information about community meetings and fundraising opportunities.
